Overview of Seminars

Kennedy Center Seminars for Artist Development

The demand for artist professional development is growing and the Kennedy Center Partners in Education program has been working to meet the demand.

The Kennedy Center offers three Seminars: two to assist teaching artists and arts educators in planning and presenting workshops for teachers, and another to assist teaching artists to plan effective artist residencies.

All three Seminars have been designed with active participation in mind, up-to-date technology including PowerPoint presentations, and a binder of beautiful color resource materials for participants.  Seminar Sponsoring organizations play a role in the presentation of each Seminar.  A detailed Guide for Sponsors, that describes all Sponsor responsibilities, is provided.

The three two-day Seminars are:

  1. Artists as Educators: Planning Effective Arts-Integrated Residencies for Students (pdf)

This “Residency Planning Seminar” is designed for teaching artists and arts educators who want to explore how to design effective, multi-session instructional residencies for students that integrate the arts with another area of study.  Through activities and discussions, participants examine the components of a Residency Plan and apply a process for developing their own Residency Plan.

  2. Artists as Educators: Planning Effective Workshops for Teachers (pdf)

This ”Workshop Planning Seminar” is designed for teaching artists and arts educators who want to explore how to design professional development workshops for teachers that integrate the arts with curriculum or other educational issues.

  3. Artists as Educators: Presenting Effective Workshops for Teachers (pdf)

This “Workshop Presenting Seminar” is designed for teaching artists and arts educators who want to explore how to more effectively present professional development workshops for teachers. While artists/arts educators have learned a process for planning effective workshops for teachers in the “Workshop Planning Seminar,” actually putting a workshop on its feet presents another set of challenges. This “Workshop Presenting Seminar” helps artists identify the roles they play when leading workshops for teachers and develop the communication skills needed to effectively present their workshops. The “Workshop Planning Seminar” (item “B” above) is a pre-requisite for this Seminar.
