Arts Management Programs

The arts management programs of the Kennedy Center Education Department have several initiatives specifically tailored for arts organizations across the country. These programs are designed to support the ability of organizations to achieve their missions by developing the strategic planning and implementation skill of key management.

Culturally Specific Performing Arts Organizations

Launched in 2002, the Capacity Building Program for Culturally Specific Performing Arts Organizations provides strategic planning guidance and other technical assistance for executive directors, artistic directors and board chairs of 32 arts organizations whose mission is to produce and present work for, by or about African-American, Latino, Asian or Native-American people. This program is made possible through the generous support of the AT &T Foundation and Countrywide Financial Corporation.

ArtsAdvantage/NYC Program

Launched in 2006, the Time Warner Cares ArtsAdvantage/NYC program is designed to address the challenges facing New York City arts organizations today.This capacity building initiative provides management support to executive directors, artistic directors, and board chairs of 33 arts organizations operating within New York City’s five boroughs. This program is made possible through the generous support of Time Warner, Inc.

Local Capacity Building Program

Launched in 2007, the Local Capacity Building Program provides strategic planning, marketing, and development guidance at monthly sessions for executive directors, artistic directors and board chairs of arts organizations in the metropolitan D.C. region. This program is a partnership between the Kennedy Center and the Catalogue of Philanthropy: Greater Washington.

Executive Seminars

Launched in 2005, the Kennedy Center Executive Seminars offer current arts managers practical training on how to facilitate the effectiveness of their organizations to succeed at their missions. These Seminars focus on strategic planning, institutional identity building, and fundraising and development as some of the core challenges faced by many not-for-profit arts organizations. Recognizing the challenges faced by arts leaders across the country and the world, the Kennedy Center Executive Seminars offer creative, resourceful, and forward-thinking solutions.

  • International Arts Manager Seminar in Mexico: September 2005
  • Board Member Seminar in Washington, DC: October 2005; October 2006; June 2007
  • Board Member Seminar in Boston: April 2007
  • Arab Arts Management Symposium in Cairo, Egypt: April 2007

Sustaining the American Orchestra

Launched in 2005, the Sustaining the American Orchestra program provided strategic planning guidance and other technical assistance for executive directors and board chairs of 23 small to mid-sized American orchestras. This program was made possible through the generous support of the AT&T Foundation.
