In collaboration with the Sundance Institute, this tour de force solo performance from playwright and performer Amer Hlehel isbased on the life of celebrated Palestinian poet Taha Muhammad Ali, whose poetry explored the experiences of Palestinian refugees. The Kennedy Center presents the world premiere of the English-language version.
This spring, the Kennedy Center embarks on a new partnership with the Sundance Institute to present a series of theater pieces from Sundance alumni artists representing Palestine.
Playwright and performer Amer Hlehel's TAHA isbased on the life of the celebrated Palestinian poet Taha Muhammad Ali, whose poetry explored the experiences of Palestinian refugees. Adapted from Adina Hoffman's book My Happiness Bears No Relation to Happiness, this tour de force solo performance powerfully communicates the sorrow, humor, resilience, and tender humanity of this extraordinary man and artist. This world premiere of the English-language version, developed in the July 2015 Sundance Lab, will be directed by Amir Nizar Zuabi, a leading theater director in the Middle East who is currently commissioned to write new plays for the Union of Theatres of Europe and the Royal National Theatre in London.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Includes a free post-performance discussion with Amer Hlhel and Amir Nizar Zuabi on March 15. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
