This amazing, conductor-less chamber orchestra is returning to help us celebrate the Terrace Theater re-opening. The group is 20 strong, yet with each individual an equally potent force. We have come to associate the word "concerto" with the image of a lone soloist in conversation with (or, in P.D.Q. Bach's creator Peter Schickele's immortal coinage, against) a huge orchestra. But, in its origin, it very often was yet another form of chamber music, pitting one set of instruments against another. Sphinx is celebrating its 20th anniversary by giving a Concerto Grosso overview, from the Baroque to the present, with a transcription of Beethoven's Grosse Fuge thrown in for good measure.
