Notes from Joseph "Yossi" Kalichstein, Artistic Director of Fortas
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Leila Josefowicz offers us a fascinating journey through the entire 20th century, beginning with its dawning, still enveloped in a cloak of Romanticism (as seen in the works of Mahler and Sibelius), and ending with the unique sounds of Saariaho, nearly a hundred years later. Two major works from the middle of the century, Prokofiev's F minor sonata--one of the most powerful and touching pieces in the violin/piano repertoire--and Zimmermann's sonata for solo violin, form the bulk of the evening.
