ABT's starry roster of dancers is just one of many assets fueling its ever-growing fan base. Another is Artist in Residence Alexei Ratmansky, who keeps our audiences in a state of awe--from his retelling of The Sleeping Beauty here in 2016 to repertory gems like Seven Sonatas presented in 2010. For two nights, the company performs Ratmansky's Serenade after Plato's Symposium, a showcase for seven male dancers hailed as "a marvel of musicality" (The New York Times) following its 2016 world premiere, on a program filled with innovation: an excerpt from With a Chance of Rain by Liam Scarlett, Artist in Residence at The Royal Ballet; Christopher Wheeldon's Thirteen Diversions, a spectacle of energy and contrast; and another work to be announced.
The company also performs the D.C. premiere of Ratmansky's full-length story ballet Whipped Cream, which will have its world premiere in 2017. In this wondrous confection, a young boy overindulges at a pastry shop and falls into a whimsical delirium. Princess Praline and her court race to the rescue, all concluding with a festive celebration! A "lost ballet" score by Richard Strauss is the inspiration for this light-as-meringue production, featuring sets and costumes by pop surrealist Mark Ryden.
