"High athleticism and technical finesse"--The Washington Post
New York City Ballet returns with two sensational repertory programs for its annual appearance, including a program to celebrate the centennials of Jerome Robbins, one of the most influential dance-makers in the company's history, and legendary composer Leonard Bernstein. Their monumental first collaboration together--the ballet Fancy Free about three sailors on leave in Manhattan, which famously led to the Broadway musical On the Town--is a highlight of NYCB's special all-Robbins program that also includes Glass Pieces, infused with postmodern dance elements and a distinct urban energy set to music by Philip Glass, and The Four Seasons, which translates Verdi's vibrant melodies into a quartet of frolicsome divertissements.
The company's opening program includes three works by legendary choreographer George Balanchine: Divertimento No. 15, a regal work of remarkable ingenuity for 16 dancers; Tschaikovsky Pas de Deux, an adrenaline rush of virtuosic bravura and technique; and Symphony in Three Movements, a kinetic "leotard" ballet noted for its confidence and power. Peter Martins also brings his Zakouski featuring two dancers in "hors d'oeuvres" for violin and piano, while Resident Choreographer and Soloist Justin Peck offers the Kennedy Center premiere of a brand new piece.
